What the numbers say
The curve is steep at the top. In the US, #1 gets about 3 times the downloads of #10, and #10 about 5 times those of #100. A climb near the top of the chart is worth far more than the same number of places further down.
Countries differ a lot: the same rank means far fewer downloads in a smaller App Store, so compare an app against the country it actually ranks in.
A chart rank is a snapshot of recent momentum, not of total users. Apps that hold a rank for weeks are worth more than ones that spike for a day; the monthly Top Grossing list and revenue by category show which apps hold on.

Questions
How many downloads does the #1 app on the App Store get?
The #1 free iPhone app in the US gets about 160K downloads a day, #10 about 54K, #100 about 11K, by AppTrendKit's estimates over the last 28 days. The #1 top grossing app takes in about $2.3M a day in App Store spend.
How much does the download count drop down the chart?
Steeply. In the US, the #1 free app gets about 16 times as many downloads a day as the #100 app. Moving from #50 to #10 matters far more than moving from #100 to #60.
How much do you need to earn to be a top grossing app?
To reach the US Top Grossing top 100, an iPhone app needs about $230K a day in App Store spend, roughly $6.9M a month, by our estimates.
Where do these numbers come from?
They are AppTrendKit estimates. We record Apple's Top Free and Top Grossing charts several times a day, estimate each app's daily downloads and spend from its chart positions, ratings and pricing, and take the median for each rank over the last 28 days. Spend is what users pay in the App Store before Apple's cut; ads and web sales are not included.

How we measured it
Several times a day we record the top 100 of Apple's Top Free and Top Grossing iPhone charts. For every app and day we take its best rank that day and our estimate of its downloads (Top Free) or App Store spend (Top Grossing) in that country that day. Each row of the tables is the median over the last 28 days; positions further down the chart pool a few neighbouring ranks (for example #46–54 for #50) so each figure rests on enough days.
At the very top, one or two apps hold each position for the whole window, so a lower position can come out above a higher one (one big game at #3 can out-earn the app at #2). Where that happens we average the neighbouring positions, weighted by days, so the curve never rises down the chart. The CSV has both the raw median and this smoothed figure.
The figures are estimates from our model, not numbers from Apple or the developers, and are rounded. A position with fewer than five app-days in the window shows a dash. Look up any single app's estimates on Explore.
